|General concept of residency for tax purposes by Vitaly Timokhov|
Vitaly will review the concepts of Canadian tax residence. This discussion will cover the concepts of deemed residency, the tie-breaker provisions found in Canadian tax treaties as well as tax consequences of Canadian tax residency from the point of view of your client.
Vitaly’s practice is focused on cross border tax planning. Vitaly is the Canadian editor and a contributing author to the Tax Advisor’s Guide to the Canada – U.S. Tax Treaty, a 2-volume loose-leaf published by Carswell Thomson.
In his presentation, Jonathan will discuss the various tax planning opportunities available to non-residents who are immigrating to Canada including the use of immigration trusts and other non-resident structures as well as the reporting obligations for offshore property and non-resident businesses.
Jonathan’s practice is focused on cross-border tax planning and private banking. He is a regular advisor to multinational families on international relocations including immigration to Canada.
Sunita’s practice is focused on cross border taxation of corporations and their executives. She is a frequent author, speaker and is the editor of Private Companies and Taxes, a Carswell Thomson publication.
In this part of the presentation, Sunita will address the various issues that arise upon the emigration of a Canadian resident and the potential options available to resolve these issues.
